SUNNYVALE, Santa Clara County — October 24, 2026. People in north Sunnyvale have been waiting for a new branch library at the Lakewood neighborhood school site. The city originally planned a grand-opening celebration for August 29, 2026, but announced on August 13 that the celebration was postponed because final construction was taking longer than anticipated. The city’s published notice said a new date would be announced when the facility was ready. A rescheduled or completed opening must be confirmed from newer city records; this report does not claim the library remains closed today.

What the facility is intended to provide

The city’s project page describes the Lakewood Branch Library and Learning Center as an approximately 20,000-square-foot, one-story facility at 760 Lakechime Drive. The undertaking is a partnership among the City of Sunnyvale, Sunnyvale School District and Fremont Union High School District. Its mission combines library access, education and wellness resources for north Sunnyvale residents.

Why Lakewood was selected

The city says some north Sunnyvale residents live two to four miles from an existing library and that the Lakewood area had relatively low library-card participation. The new location is intended to reduce that barrier. Those are the municipality’s rationale and planning observations, not a guarantee about future library attendance or an independent claim that every neighborhood household has the same travel difficulty.

Construction details and what remains to be established

The publicly posted project progress report identifies completion of foundations, walls, roof and storm drainage as major construction milestones, with windows and exterior finishing among later phases. A construction-status page may lag the real work. Before announcing a new opening or specific service hours, California58 should verify a more recent city notice and the actual library operations page.

How residents can track the next announcement

For up-to-date opening information, consult the city’s August postponement release, linked project updates and the Sunnyvale Public Library. The city project page lists Assistant City Engineer Matt Brunnings at 408-730-7518 for capital-project questions. Do not interpret a planned fall celebration as a scheduled event unless an actual date has been formally posted.
