SUNNYVALE, Santa Clara County — October 24, 2026. The City of Sunnyvale has been planning a second round of improvements to Plaza del Sol, an urban gathering space built above an underground parking structure near West Evelyn Avenue and South Frances Street. The existing plaza dates to 2004, but the Phase II improvements have gone through years of redesign and changing budgets. The published project description contains detailed planned amenities, though it is not sufficient to establish exactly which construction milestones are finished today.

What the city has proposed

The Sunnyvale Plaza del Sol Phase II project page lists a covered garage entrance ramp, play area, overhead lighting, spray misters, landscape improvements, a redesigned labyrinth, seating walls and public Wi-Fi among community priorities or intended features. Some design elements have been revised over time. A design illustration should not be treated as proof that every amenity has been installed.

Why the project has taken years

Sunnyvale says the council approved a phased approach in 2003 and completed the first plaza phase in 2004. Plans for the remaining phase were deferred and revised to reflect other budget needs, nearby downtown development and adjustments to proposed amenities. The city hired design consultants in 2021 and later considered more funding for public art and Wi-Fi.

Understanding the posted schedule

The city webpage records “Construction bids received” and a next step of a contract award expected in late July 2026. That was a timetable published earlier in the year, not independent evidence that a contract was awarded on that date or construction is already finished in October. A proper follow-up should check the council contract award, any construction notice and the project’s updated timeline.

Where to send questions

The city’s page lists Assistant City Engineer Nathan Scribner at 408-730-2783 for project inquiries. Residents may ask how the design balances shade, accessible paths, family gathering space, impacts on adjacent businesses and maintenance costs. Responses should be checked against the council documents linked to the project page rather than inferred from old concept drawings.
